Why I Can't Wait to Play with Drones

First of all, THEY AREN'T DRONES. Or if they are drones they aren't the ones that will liquidate you're organs and kill your family. There are certain UAVs for that, but you're  probably not going to get blown up by one. Yet.

I'm just talking about robots. Robots in the sky. The entire nerdiverse calls them UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) or UASs (Unmanned Aerial Systems). But I like sky robots, because it sounds as immature as the industry actually is.

The crazy thing is, sky robots aren't done growing yet. I've been wishing my entire short career for a part of the aircraft industry that isn't fully developed... well this is it. It's as young as social networking, and we haven't even figured out all the things UAVs would be great for. And now I want to find out what all those things are.

Think about it. At this very moment there is an idea for a sky robot that you or I could think up, design, test, prototype, and produce that would actually make a serious impact on the world. Not that the FAA would let you fly it yet but when they do (check out FAA's roadmap here), oh boy times will change for good.

Do you have any ideas for sky robots? Good things? Evil things? Border patrol, land surveying, aerial photography, environmental protection surveying, power line surveying, there are plenty of companies starting to run in their own direction.

I'm beginning to think I should be one of them.
